Tip #8: Mandevilla (Mandevilla spp.)

For non-stop tropical brilliance from late spring until the first winter freeze, few best climbing plants rival the vivid performance of mandevilla. Featuring glossy, leathery green leaves and trumpet-shaped flowers that reach up to four inches across, this vine comes in fiery shades of crimson, hot pink, soft rose, and brilliant white. Mandevilla utilizes flexible twining stems to climb five to ten feet along trellises, chain-link fences, or patio railings during a single warm season. In warm southern climates (zones 10 through 11), it grows as a perennial; in colder northern regions, gardeners enjoy it as an annual or overwinter container plants indoors. Plant mandevilla in a location receiving bright, filtered sunlight or direct morning sun, as intense scorching afternoon heat in dry climates can stress tender foliage. Ensure your soil drains quickly, and apply a high-phosphorus liquid blossom-booster fertilizer every two weeks throughout summer to fuel continuous bud production.
