Tip #9: Morning Glory (Ipomoea purpurea)
A nostalgic favorite in vine landscaping ideas, morning glory provides unmatched speed and vibrant early-morning color for budget-conscious home gardeners. Direct-sown from inexpensive seed packets after the last spring frost, these fast growing flowering vines sprout within days and vigorously scale six- to twelve-foot fences by midsummer. Deep velvety purple, sky blue, magenta, and variegated heart-shaped blossoms open wide at dawn to greet early-rising pollinators, gently folding shut during the heat of late afternoon. Morning glory vines twine effortlessly around wire fencing, chain-link mesh, or vertical string lattices without requiring heavy structural reinforcing. Plant them in average, well-draining soil in full sun; avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which encourage dense leaf foliage at the expense of flower production. Note that morning glories readily self-seed; if you wish to prevent volunteers from appearing the following spring, deadhead spent flowers before they form dry seed pods.
