Tip #6: Lantana
When the temperature rises to uncomfortable extremes, lantana kicks into high gear. This phenomenal plant behaves as a tough perennial in warm climates and serves as a sensational, fast-growing annual in cooler zones. Lantana produces clusters of tiny, tubular flowers that frequently change color as they age, creating a mesmerizing, multi-colored confetti effect on a single plant.
Lantana is exceptionally drought-tolerant once its root system settles into your garden. You should allow the top few inches of soil to dry out completely before providing deep supplemental watering. Overwatering lantana is one of the few ways you can actually harm it, as it despises soggy roots.
If you want to attract pollinators, lantana is highly effective. Swallowtail butterflies, monarchs, and hummingbirds will visit these blooms relentlessly. However, you should place lantana thoughtfully if you have curious pets or young children; the leaves and unripe berries can be toxic if ingested.
