Tip #3: Trumpet Honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens)

When selecting garden plants for hummingbirds all summer, vertical elements play a pivotal role in creating a multi-layered wildlife habitat. Trumpet Honeysuckle—a non-invasive native twining vine—produces clusters of long, tubular scarlet flowers with warm yellow throats from May straight through September. Unlike its aggressive, invasive counterpart (Japanese honeysuckle), *Lonicera sempervirens* behaves politely in residential landscapes, climbing gracefully without strangling neighboring shrubs or tearing down fences.

The deep, four-inch floral tubes of trumpet honeysuckle evolved specifically to accommodate the long tongues and slender bills of hummingbirds, effectively excluding short-tongued bees from stealing nectar. In addition to delivering continuous nourishment, the dense, semi-evergreen foliage of this vigorous climber offers secure roosting spots, shelter from strong winds, and safe nesting sites for hummingbirds and other beneficial backyard songbirds.

Install trumpet honeysuckle near a sturdy trellis, wooden arbor, pergola, or chain-link fence situated in full sun. While the vine tolerates light shade, maximum floral density occurs in bright, direct light. Provide average, well-drained garden soil and water deeply during the first growing season to establish an extensive root system. Once established, trumpet honeysuckle displays remarkable drought tolerance. Prune lightly after the primary spring bloom cycle to shape the vine and stimulate a prolific second flush of flowers that will last through late summer.
