Low-light bathrooms are some of the gloomiest places in our homes, even if we do not mean for them to look like that.
However, there are ways to bring more life and better vibes to low-light bathrooms, and the solution may be to add a couple of plants in the restroom!
Despite this, not all plants are made to be kept in bathrooms, let alone those that do not get enough light. There are several things you need to take into consideration before you end up buying low-light bathroom plants.
First, assess whether you have a low-light or no-light space; generally speaking, any room that gets some natural light coming in is considered low-light, while no-light is places that get no natural light whatsoever.

1. Chinese evergreens (Aglaonema)
These green wonders come in a wide variety, and they can live in any corner of your home happily. Not only that, but they are also great low-light space lovers, which makes them perfect for any of your bathrooms or low-light spaces.
The Chinese Evergreen comes in a wide range of both colored foliage and patterns, and it can immediately create contrast and interest in any room it is placed in, especially in a low-light bathroom!
However, do not go for any Chinese Evergreen for bathrooms that get little light; the darker leaf varieties are best suited for darker bathrooms, and they will blend in easier.
The best varieties are Pattaya Beauty and the “Maria” variety. They are darker green with silver patterns, which will bring lightness to your bathroom.
Even better, they are really easy to care for, and in darker spaces, they have low watering needs as well. Not to mention, the Chinese Evergreen is a known symbol of luck!
2. ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)
If you remember one of the plants on this list that are good for low-light to dark places, then it should be the ZZ plant. This plant is great for dark spaces, and it can even thrive in artificial lighting.
Known for being hardy and being able to survive in some of the weirdest lighting situations, the ZZ plant has evergreen foliage that is going to be tolerant even if your bathroom has no source of natural lighting.
As long as you remember to water this evergreen plant properly, the ZZ plant will be happy in most environments; however, you have to be cautious about how much you water it.
These plants are made to withstand drought, so you can easily end up overwatering them.
They are a great statement plant for your bathroom, but all in all, you should make sure you do not water it too often, or it will meet its end sooner than later and it will not be a light issue.
With this one, it is better to forget to water it than to water it too often, but keep an eye on it and water it for 2 to 3 weeks with enough time for the soil to dry in between.
3. Split leaf philodendron (Philodendron selloum)
Another statement plant that is perfect for bathrooms that have space is the split-leaf philodendron in particular. There are a number of philodendrons that could work, but this one is notable since it has a large presence through its gorgeous green leaves.
They are the perfect plant if your bathroom has a low-light one. Bringing a tropical charm with it, this plant will be able to brighten your bathroom while being lush and not needing too much attention from you.
The one thing you need to keep in mind is that this plant gets “leggy.” While it can definitely thrive in a low-light space, it will definitely start stretching to be able to reach the light.
To make sure it does not end up growing crazily in your bathroom, you should make sure to rotate it every time you water it (seven to ten days, depending on the soil).
Even better, you should make sure you place it relatively close to the light source in your bathroom so that it can stay as compact and full as possible.
4. Mother-in-law’s tongue (Sansevieria)
A staple when it comes to the darker corners of houses, this plant has made a name for itself and carved a place in offices and homes around the country.
The mother-in-law’s tongue plant can be a great addition to every low-light bathroom, where it will bring some of the natural world and calm nature with every green leaf.
If you are looking for a plant that is more structured and will look amazing either next to the basin or bathroom, this is the plant for that.
The great thing about it is that it can also look amazing standing tall in any corner of your bathroom, and it will end up thriving even if you have a no-natural-light bathroom too!
The only thing you need to be careful of is the same with the ZZ plant! Be cautious when watering them so that they can stay healthy and happy and bring color and joy to your space for years to come!
5. Spider plant (Chlorophytum)
The last, but definitely not least, on our list is the spider plant! This ribbon-like plant is a gorgeous addition to any low-light bathroom since it will definitely thrive there.
Originating from South Africa, these plants have been known to grow in dapple shade, and they can easily create a combination of white and green foliage that will curl adorably and brighten any space they are found in.
The best way to display this plant in your bathroom is to make use of a hanging basket, which means that you do not have to worry about where you can store it on a counter!
It will soon create a lush cascade of foliage, and the stolons will sport young sprouts in no time, creating a gorgeous view.
They will happily live in a low-light bathroom, but they cannot go without natural light at all.
One thing to be careful of is their watering schedule; you should water them when the soil looks 5–7% to 70% dry and always keep an eye on the leaves.
If they have crispy edges, then they are underwatered, but if they have dark brown tips, then you are overwatering!
