Living or green walls

One of my favorite ways to create a gorgeous vertical garden is to use living or green walls. This is a regular wall covered in plants, either grown in soil-filled pockets attached to the wall or in hydroponic systems that circulate water and nutrients, so every plant can be healthy and happy.

Trellises and supports

Did you know you can use supports and trellises to make the most gorgeous garden ever? These simple structures allow your lovely climbing plants, like roses and clematis, to grow vertically. This will add some height and a breezy focal point to a garden fence or wall. In case you need some privacy, trellises are the perfect option for you because they create amazing privacy screens.

Tower gardens

If you have a green thumb, you can create a lovely tower garden. This one is all about growing plants in stacked layers using hydroponics technology, and it’s a great choice for those who want to grow veggies like tomatoes and lettuce in tiny spaces.

Pallet gardens

For those who want a more affordable approach, pallet gardens are a fantastic way to create a garden oasis in your space. You can easily repurpose old wooden pallets and create a vertical planter you can then lean against a fence or hang on a wall. If you want to grow succulents, herbs, or any other tiny plant, this DIY method might be for you.

Now that you know more about methods to create a vertical garden, let’s talk about some amazing tips:

1. Plant variety

To create a gorgeous and cohesive look, try planting a mix of perennials and annuals for a pop of color and interest. Tall climbers, such as jasmine and honeysuckle, add some dimension and a gorgeous smell to your space, and they’re always a great option.

If you need extra fragrance, you can plant shrubs like rosemary and lavender, and the best part is that you can use the rosemary to cook some delicious meals.

2. Lightweight soil

To create a durable vertical garden, you must use lightweight soil so that your structure won’t be weighed down. Otherwise, it can lead to drainage issues. So the next time you go to a gardening store, make sure you get potting mix specifically made for container gardening.

3. The right containers

A gorgeous vertical garden starts with using the right plants, soil, and, of course, containers. Choose something that looks good and also serves its purpose. Whether you want wall planters, trellises, hanging baskets, or other vertical planters, make sure they’re deep enough and have drainage holes for proper water drainage.

4. Vertical planters

Since you want to create a vertical garden, you should consider adding vertical planters. They can be fixed to any vertical surface, such as walls or fences, and they’re a fantastic solution to increase the height of vertical gardens. They also reduce the risk of spilling water or dirt on the ground below, making watering easier and more effective.

5. Vertical irrigation system

Did you know that installing a vertical irrigation system can facilitate and improve the regular watering of vertical gardens? With this kind of system, water is directly delivered to the plants from a single source thanks to a network of vertical pipes that are fastened to the vertical garden framework. This technique will make your job a lot easier, so definitely think about adding a system like this to your gorgeous space!

6. Use sunlight

If you want to help your vertical garden flourish and be as pretty as it can be, experts recommend you maximize the sunlight. Since your plants need the sun to grow, think about where you’ll place everything for the best results. To make things simpler in the long run, try to place your shrubs in an area that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight each day.

7. Maintenance requirements

Keep in mind that your vertical garden needs regular upkeep and pruning to look its best. When you design it, think about how easy it will be to take care of maintenance tasks. For simple upkeep, consider low-maintenance choices such as installing self-watering containers or automatic watering systems.

8. Vertical structures

As we mentioned at the beginning of this article, you can create a stunning vertical garden on almost any vertical structure, from arbors to walls, pergolas, and trees. Each one of these structures offers enough vertical support for your gorgeous plants while still adding extra height and dimension to your design.

9. Vertical lightening

Lighting is one of the best tools to create a whimsical vibe in your vertical garden. Besides creating a nice atmosphere, it also helps you see your beautiful plants in the dark. You can use tiny spotlights to highlight certain features, like your vertical structures or a lovely pathway. This will take the entire design to the next level, so don’t neglect it!

10. Combine climbers with vertical plants

A vertical garden is a fantastic way for people who aren’t blessed with a ton of space to grow plants like tomatoes, peppers, or climbing roses. But if you want to take it up a notch, we have a tip for you. Pair with trailing vines and flowering climbers like morning glory or clematis for a stunning vertical display that blooms all year long. It’s an easy but effective way to add some serious wow factor to your garden!

11. Alternative vertical supports

To create the illusion of height in your vertical garden, you can use vertical supports such as bamboo stakes, metal cages, or even simple tomato cages. These supports also provide extra stability for the vines and climbers growing on them. The key to success here is to use robust materials made especially for vertical gardening and to ensure that they are firmly fixed in place for the necessary stability.

12. Mix it up

If you want to create an eye-catching design, you have to mix things up! Create a colorful and dynamic vertical garden using different plant textures and colors. Not only does this add beauty and interest to your space, but it also hides any bare spots.
