NEVER Keep These 9 Plants in the Bathroom

Plants in the bathroom? These hate it there!

A lot of plants enjoy moist soil, a humid environment, and a ton of natural light. This may make you think that the ideal place for your houseplants is the bathroom. While for some, this is a valid argument, others hate it so much!

Succulents, fruiting plants, jade, and hibiscus should be avoided since they don’t do well in bathrooms, which are usually warmer and receive less sunlight. Study the original plan’s location while choosing appropriate plants for your bathroom. It could not do well in humid circumstances if the plant is not tropical.

Now, chop-chop, because I don’t want to bore you with the first lines, and let’s get to the point and see which plants you should never have in your bathroom.

Ponytail Palm

I am starting the list of plants that don’t belong in the bathroom with the ponytail palm. Even though this is an exotic plant, enjoy strong indirect light or the full sun. Ponytail palms can do well in low light, they shouldn’t be kept in humid places like bathrooms. Originating from the desert, they prefer dry places. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you that you must also avoid placing them near windows because their foliage will dry easily this way!

If you keep your ponytail plant outside, make sure the top two to three inches of soil dry out completely before giving it a thorough soak. And if you keep it indoors, water it every three or four weeks.

Monkey Mask Monstera

If you know a little about Monkey Mask Monstera, you would think that this plant would be ideal for the bathroom because it does appreciate dampness. But after being watered, the soil needs to be allowed to dry out; this is particularly necessary in the winter, when it may only need to be watered every few weeks. A bathroom will not permit this since it would keep the soil wet.

Succulents and cacti

I mentioned this detail briefly in the article’s first lines, but now I will take the discussion a bit further. Another two plants that don’t belong in the bathroom are cacti and succulents. Why?

Because they require little to no maintenance, succulents, and cacti, which are members of the succulent family, are among the most popular houseplants that most people have. It would be wise to avoid planting succulents in a bathroom since they love dry environments—that’s where they thrive in the wild. It is completely out of character for them to be kept in a wet, moist bathroom.

Howea forsteriana

Among the plants that don’t belong in the bathroom is Howea forsteriana. A tropical low-maintenance plant is frequently said to be able to thrive anywhere. It tolerates low light levels and cold temperatures, and it requires less watering during the cold season but hates moist environments. So, if I were you, I would keep it away from the bathroom, preferably in the living room in a corner or on the balcony for a more exotic ambiance.

Strelitzia Nicolai

Often referred to as the “white bird of paradise,” this towering tree-like plant can reach a height of six feet indoors, which makes it the perfect plant for placing in empty areas. Large living rooms and entry halls are the best places for it. It is not worth keeping in a bathroom due to its large leaves that take up valuable space.

Haworthia truncate

As you can see in the picture, unlike any other Haworthia plant, the popular house plant Haworthia truncate has a unique appearance. The leaves have transparent ends that allow sunlight, giving them the appearance of big green fangs.

As they only require watering when their soil is super dry and their leaves begin to curl every three weeks or longer throughout the winter, a bathroom will not provide the optimal circumstances for them to flourish.

Jade Plant

They say that if you seek positive energy in your house, then you must adopt a jade plant. In Asia, at least, this is a very popular houseplant because it helps maintain health even if you’re a busy person. The jade plant loves almost any environment but dislikes humidity, so putting it in the bathroom would be a huge mistake.

Instead, place it around your workplace, in the living room, or even on the porch. It is supposed to be more effective in bringing good energy this way.

Euphorbia Candelabrum

In summer, the Euphorbia candelabrum demands small amounts of water; in the winter, it must be kept dry. Overwatering is a typical cause of cactus corky scab when cultivated in very humid environments. Bathrooms are not ideal locations for euphorbia candelabrums as they can cause yellow and brown stains on the foliage.

Arboreum Zwartkop

Arboreum Zwartkop is one of the plants that don’t belong in the bathroom. Although they don’t need a lot of attention from you, which makes them some of the best companions for busy people, the brightest spot in the room is their favorite place. As with cacti and other succulents, they love drought, so if you forget to water them, they won’t mind.

Now let’s see which plants actually thrive in humid conditions and you can safely bring them to your bathroom oasis:

Pothos

Being among the simplest plants to maintain, pothos is an excellent choice for those who are beginners in the field. Given that it is a vine, it may be trailed over mirrors and vanities and looks fantastic hanging from a shower pole. These lush, green leaves have the potential to grow fairly large, creating a tropical display in your bathroom.

Bird Nest Ferns

Your bathroom is an ideal habitat for a bird nest fern if it is damp and dimly lit. Remember that dim light is not the same as no light at all. Consider how much of the natural light they can “see” from where they are. While this plant loves moist spaces, don’t expect it to be happy if you place it in a bathroom without windows because it requires at least a little sunlight for optimal growth.

Phalaenopsis Orchids

One of the plants that’s supposed to be fussy, at least according to rumors, will absolutely love your bathroom. Especially if it’s well-lit and spacious. It won’t need your attention too much, so don’t worry if you forget to say hello to it two days in a row.

Just give them a quick wash every few weeks, letting the soil dry out in between waterings.

Majesty Palm

Do you want to turn your bathroom into a tiny jungle? Then adopt a Majesty Palm! You may even take it with you in the shower sometimes to give it a little more moisture, as they live for humidity.

Since this plant will grow particularly tall, be mindful of the space. If your bathroom has tall walls, it will be the perfect addition! Otherwise, you might have to move it to a wider area.

With that being said, this was my article about plants that hate or totally love the bathroom space. I hope you enjoyed reading it, and if you did, I hope you will become a subscriber to our page, Gardeners and Plants, the land of everybody who has a green thumb. Until next time!
