When winter rolls around, the sky is grayer, the days are shorter, the beverages are warmer, and the days are shorter. Since the weather is chillier, you’re more tempted to stay in and chill. But here’s a little way to bring life, color, fresh air, and even a little sunshine into your home—with the help of houseplants. Not only do they refresh the air in every space, but they’re also natural mood boosters and can easily brighten your winter days.

1. Inviting space

When you surround yourself with things that make you smile, you’ll feel happier and more relaxed, regardless of the weather. Being surrounded by your favorite houseplants will make your space feel comfy and welcoming, which in turn will lower your anxiety and stress levels.

After several studies, experts concluded that plants and greenery are fantastic ways to help an individual feel soothed and relaxed. You might experience winter blues due to not being able to be outside for as long as you might want, but you can brighten your winter days with houseplants.

Add some lush, living decor to make your space breezier and more natural, and notice how good you’re going to feel. If you need some inspiration, I recommend going for Bromeliad Summer for a pop of color or Parlor Palm for a jungle feel.

2. Connect with nature

Summertime is all about being outside, enjoying the warm rays of the sun, and having fun with the people you love; you’re deeply connected to nature, and sometimes you’re home just to eat and sleep. If you feel reminiscent of those good times, don’t worry, because I know how to brighten your winter days.

Houseplants are the perfect way to bring nature indoors, making you feel connected to the outside world. Not only does this make you feel more soothed, but it can also make you excited for the warmer season. Remember that you don’t have to always be outside to see the world blossom! Nature is always around you; you just have to look at it.

3. Great hobby

Houseplants not only look pretty and brighten your winter days, but they also give you something fun and enjoyable to do when you’re spending more time at home.

I don’t know about you, but for me, the colder months are all about self-care, slowing down, relaxation, and lovely hobbies. I love being surrounded by nature, and taking care of the plants makes me feel grounded and calm.

If you’d like to feel that way too, I couldn’t recommend houseplants enough. Taking the time to water, trim, fertilize, or even admire them will turn into a beautiful hobby. It makes you feel more present, clears your head from all the stress you accumulate daily, and helps you be more mindful.

Once you learn how to properly take care of your plants, you’ll have something to look forward to each day. Say goodbye to winter blues!

 4. Purify the air

I’m pretty sure this isn’t something new to you, but we had to include it in our list. Plants are the best at improving the quality of the air in your space. A NASA study concluded that plants contributed to improving air quality in a sealed spacecraft.

They’re amazing for releasing oxygen and absorbing air pollutants. Even though we don’t live in metal tubes, we can still benefit from their amazing qualities. Plans will quickly eliminate these contaminants from the air, so you can breathe and sleep better. Walking up rested after a full night of sleep will put you in a good mood, which, in turn, will brighten your winter days.

5. Add a pop of color

Here’s one of the things I love most about houseplants: they add a pop of color to any space, completely changing a room’s feel. If you choose winter-blooming plants, make sure you add Christmas cactus to your cart, because its gorgeous red, white, or bright pink flowers will make each day extra special.

Another one of my favorites is the African violet because it’s low-maintenance but produces the most incredible pink and purple flowers. It only needs indirect light and occasional water, but it will surely brighten your winter days.

Besides making you feel happier and more alive, these will remind you that spring will come sooner than you think. Place them in spots you spend a lot of time in, such as in your living room, on your desk, or even on the kitchen window. These will help you romanticize gloomy days, which will only benefit your mental health and productivity.

6. Lift the mood

Another great way to brighten your winter days is to choose scented plants. I’m one of those people who always feels better when there’s a magical aroma near me, and colder months are more special with aromatic plants.

My personal favorites are rosemary, basil, lavender, and mint. These are calming and refreshing and can also be used in the kitchen, whether for making a cozy and delicious tea or a wonderful meal to enjoy with your family.

If you want to add these plants to your “collection,” make sure you provide them with bright light so they can thrive and turn your home into a magical oasis. To make things extra special, I recommend adding these plants to your bathroom, kitchen, and living room, so they can enhance your indoor ambiance.

…If you have trouble sleeping, put lavender on your nightstand or in a corner of your bedroom. It will relax your mind and senses, so you can have a night full of rest.

7. Green oasis

If you want to make your space even more gorgeous and have a relaxing nook to spend time in, curl up with a great book and a nice cup of tea, or simply admire each time you feel exhausted, you should follow this tip.

All you have to do is pick a few plants you like, like cacti, ferns, bromeliad pineapple, Money Tree Forest, bamboo, Norfolk, or anything in between, and put them in a corner of your room, or next to the couch or a chair you like to relax in. I have a rocking chair in my living room (you can get one from here if you’d like), and I put five pots of plants around it to make myself feel like I’m in a botanical garden. It’s such a nice and cozy feel; I couldn’t recommend this enough.

At the end of the day, there are many ways you can brighten your winter days; it depends on what you like. However, if you want to bring nature indoors, regardless of the season, houseplants are a fabulous way to do so.
